Biopsy Services
At Thyroid Medical Institute, we believe that clarity leads to confidence — especially when it comes to your thyroid health. If you’ve been told you have a thyroid nodule or abnormal imaging results, a biopsy can provide the critical information needed to determine whether further treatment is necessary.
Under the leadership of Dr. Rodolfo A. Perez, a board-certified endocrinologist with over 30 years of experience, we offer precise, minimally invasive biopsy procedures that prioritize accuracy, comfort, and patient understanding every step of the way.
Why Biopsies Matter
Thyroid nodules are very common — in fact, millions of people develop them at some point in their lives. Fortunately, most nodules are benign (non-cancerous). However, a small percentage may be malignant (cancerous) or have the potential to become problematic over time.
That’s where biopsies play a crucial role. A biopsy allows us to:
- Determine whether a thyroid nodule is benign or malignant
- Avoid unnecessary surgeries or overtreatment
- Guide your treatment plan with precision
- Detect thyroid cancer or other issues at the earliest possible stage
With timely biopsy testing, we can help you avoid guesswork and make well-informed decisions about your thyroid care.

Our Advanced Biopsy Services
At Thyroid Medical Institute, we provide two leading biopsy procedures, selected based on your specific condition and the characteristics of your thyroid nodules.
1. Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) Biopsy
The Fine Needle Aspiration biopsy is the most commonly performed procedure for evaluating thyroid nodules and is considered the gold standard for diagnosing suspicious growths in the thyroid gland.
Here’s what makes it effective:
- Performed using a very thin, hollow needle
- Usually done in-office under ultrasound guidance
- Takes only a few minutes to complete
- Minimal discomfort (comparable to a blood draw)
- Provides rapid and accurate cellular results
Using this method, Dr. Perez collects a small sample of cells directly from the nodule. These cells are then sent to a pathology lab to determine if the nodule is benign, cancerous, or indeterminate. The results help shape your personalized care plan — whether it involves observation, medication, or further treatment.
2. Core Needle Biopsy
In some cases, a core needle biopsy may be recommended instead of or following an FNA. This method uses a slightly larger needle to collect a small tissue sample rather than just loose cells.
Why choose a core biopsy?
- Provides a larger, more detailed tissue sample
- Ideal when FNA results are inconclusive
- Allows for more in-depth analysis of the tissue structure
- Helps guide complex or borderline diagnoses
Core biopsies are especially valuable when we need a more comprehensive understanding of a suspicious lesion. Like the FNA, this procedure is done with precision and a focus on minimizing discomfort.
What to Expect During Your Biopsy
We understand that the word “biopsy” can sound intimidating — but at our office, it’s a safe, quick, and virtually painless procedure.
Here’s what you can expect:
- Personalized preparation:
Dr. Perez will meet with you beforehand to explain the procedure in detail and answer any questions you may have. We want you to feel confident and at ease. - Ultrasound guidance:
During the biopsy, we use real-time ultrasound imaging to precisely target the area of concern. This ensures both accuracy and safety. - Short and simple process:
The procedure usually takes less than 15–30 minutes, and you remain awake the entire time. - Mild sensations:
Most patients report only a feeling of pressure or a small pinch. Serious discomfort is very rare.
Post-procedure care:
You may experience mild bruising or tenderness at the site, but this typically resolves within a day or two.

Lab Analysis and Results
Once your biopsy is complete, the samples are carefully sent to a specialized pathology lab for evaluation. The lab will assess whether the cells are:
- Benign (non-cancerous)
- Malignant (cancerous)
- Atypical or indeterminate (requiring additional testing or follow-up)
Most biopsy results are available within 5 to 7 days.

Follow-Up and Personalized Care Plan
Once results are in, Dr. Perez will schedule a follow-up visit to:
- Review your results in clear, understandable terms
- Discuss whether further testing or treatment is needed
- Recommend a tailored action plan — from monitoring to surgery to medical management
- Provide emotional support and guidance throughout the process
At Thyroid Medical Institute, you’re never just a number or a diagnosis — we ensure that your care plan reflects your health goals, lifestyle, and peace of mind.
