Neck Biopsies
Accurate Diagnosis for Neck Masses and Lymph Nodes
At Thyroid Medical Institute, we perform neck biopsies to evaluate abnormal lumps, nodules, or swollen lymph nodes in the neck. These biopsies are a vital diagnostic tool for identifying infections, inflammatory conditions, benign growths, or signs of cancer.
Led by Dr. Rodolfo A. Perez, a board-certified endocrinologist with over 30 years of experience, our team uses advanced imaging and biopsy techniques to ensure accurate diagnosis with minimal discomfort and maximum peace of mind.
What Is a Neck Biopsy?
A neck biopsy involves collecting a small sample of tissue or cells from a mass or enlarged lymph node in the neck. This tissue is then analyzed under a microscope to identify whether the cause is:
- Benign (non-cancerous)
- Malignant (cancerous)
- Inflammatory or infectious
- Indeterminate (requiring additional testing)
Depending on the location and nature of the lump, Dr. Perez will determine the best biopsy method — typically either a Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) or Core Needle Biopsy guided by ultrasound for precision.

When Is a Neck Biopsy Recommended?
Dr. Perez may recommend a biopsy if you present with:
- A persistent lump or swelling in the neck
- Enlarged cervical lymph nodes lasting more than a few weeks
- A thyroid nodule extending beyond the gland into the neck
- A history of cancer or suspicious imaging results
- Unexplained symptoms such as hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, night sweats, weight loss, or chronic sore throat
Early diagnosis allows for appropriate treatment and may help detect serious conditions—like lymphoma or metastatic cancer—at a more treatable stage.

What Types of Neck Biopsies Do We Perform?
- Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA):
- Uses a very thin needle to extract cells
- Ideal for superficial or small nodules and lymph nodes
- Performed under local anesthesia with ultrasound guidance
- Minimally invasive and usually painless
- Core Needle Biopsy:
- Uses a slightly larger needle to remove a small core of tissue
- Recommended when a more detailed sample is needed
- Allows for more accurate diagnosis in complex cases
Both techniques are performed in-office and typically take 15–45 minutes. No general anesthesia or hospital stay is required.

What to Expect During the Procedure
We take every step to ensure your comfort and understanding:
- Before the biopsy:
Dr. Perez will explain the reason for the procedure, what to expect, and address any questions or concerns. - During the biopsy:
- You will lie comfortably on the exam table.
- A local anesthetic is applied to numb the area.
- Using ultrasound guidance, the needle is gently inserted into the lump or node.
- Multiple samples may be taken for a complete evaluation.
- After the biopsy:
- A small bandage is applied.
- Most patients experience minimal discomfort, similar to a blood draw.
You can resume regular activities the same day.

Aftercare and Results
After your neck biopsy:
- Mild swelling or bruising is normal and typically resolves within a few days.
- Avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours after the procedure.
- Results are usually available within 5–7 business days.
- Dr. Perez will personally review the pathology report with you and explain:
- Whether the tissue is benign or malignant
- If further testing or imaging is needed
Next steps for treatment, monitoring, or referral
