Diagnostic Testing

At Thyroid Medical Institute, we understand that accurate diagnosis is the essential first step to effective, personalized treatment. That’s why we offer a full suite of advanced diagnostic testing services designed to give you and your care team a detailed understanding of your thyroid health and overall endocrine function.

Led by Dr. Rodolfo A. Perez, a board-certified endocrinologist with over 30 years of experience, our team is committed to precision, safety, and compassionate care throughout every step of your diagnostic journey.

Why Diagnostic Testing Matters

he thyroid gland is small, but it plays a critical role in regulating many of your body’s key systems — including metabolism, energy production, mood, heart rate, and more. Even mild imbalances in thyroid hormone levels can lead to widespread symptoms affecting your quality of life.

Accurate diagnostic testing allows us to:

  • Detect thyroid disorders early — before symptoms become severe

  • Monitor existing conditions such as hypothyroidism or Graves’ disease

  • Assess how well current treatments are working

  • Identify other endocrine-related issues that may be affecting your health

Whether you’re experiencing symptoms or undergoing regular thyroid care, these tests are vital in helping us design a plan that’s fully tailored to your unique needs.

Our Comprehensive Testing Services

We offer a wide range of in-house and referral-based diagnostic procedures, all designed to provide fast, clear results:

1. Thyroid Function Blood Tests

These are the most common initial tests used to evaluate thyroid function:

  • TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone): This hormone tells your thyroid how much hormone to produce. Abnormal TSH levels often indicate thyroid dysfunction.
  • Free T3 and Free T4: These are the active thyroid hormones. Testing their levels helps us evaluate whether your thyroid is overactive, underactive, or functioning normally.
  • Thyroid Antibodies (TPOAb, TgAb): These tests check for autoimmune thyroid conditions such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or Graves’ disease, where the body mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland.

2. Thyroid Ultrasound

A non-invasive imaging test, thyroid ultrasound allows us to assess the size, shape, and structure of your thyroid gland. It helps detect:

  • Nodules (solid or fluid-filled lumps)
  • Goiter (thyroid enlargement)
  • Cysts
  • Inflammation or irregular blood flow

Ultrasound is often used alongside lab tests to provide a complete diagnostic picture.

3. Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) Biopsy

If a thyroid nodule is found during imaging or a physical exam, an FNA biopsy may be recommended. This minimally invasive procedure is performed in-office and involves using a very fine needle to collect a small sample of cells for analysis. It helps determine whether a nodule is benign (non-cancerous) or requires further evaluation or monitoring.

4. Core Needle Biopsy

For nodules or thyroid growths that require more detailed tissue analysis, a core needle biopsy may be performed. This procedure provides a larger sample size than FNA and allows pathologists to examine the cellular architecture more thoroughly. It is especially useful when FNA results are inconclusive.

5. Comprehensive Endocrine Panel

Because endocrine conditions often overlap, we offer broader hormonal evaluations beyond just the thyroid. This includes testing:

  • Adrenal hormones (like cortisol)
  • Pituitary hormones
  • Reproductive hormones (such as estrogen, testosterone, and prolactin)

This full-spectrum endocrine testing allows us to rule out or identify co-existing hormonal imbalances that may be mimicking or contributing to thyroid symptoms.

What to Expect During Testing

We know medical testing can feel overwhelming, so our team strives to make the experience as simple and comfortable as possible:

  • Dr. Perez will clearly explain the purpose of each test and what it can reveal.
  • Most blood tests are quick and minimally invasive, typically completed in just a few minutes.
  • Ultrasound and biopsy procedures are performed in a calm, private environment with patient comfort as a top priority.

You will receive most results within a few days, and we will schedule a follow-up to review them in detail.

Personalized Follow-Up Care

Once your results are ready, Dr. Perez will:

  • Walk you through each test result
  • Explain how your thyroid and endocrine function may be affecting your symptoms
  • Provide a customized treatment or monitoring plan that fits your individual health profile

This might include adjusting medication, scheduling further imaging, or planning regular follow-ups to track your progress.
